Visit of the Moderator of the General Assembly

by Fiona Kennedy - 10:58 on 29 October 2009

125th Anniversary Service

On Sunday, 18th October we were privileged to have the Rt. Rev. William Hewitt, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, conduct our Service of Worship in celebration of the 125th anniversary of St Ninian’s Parish Church.

The service was well attended by members of our congregation and we were delighted to be joined by a good attendance from our linked church of Portpatrick, together with a few invited guests. It was also pleasing to welcome visitors from other congregations who wished to share with us on this occasion.

Mr Kennedy warmly welcomed everyone and the presentation of long service certificates was made to 3 elders with over thirty years service – John Cockburn, Tom McKail, and Ian Paterson. The Moderator also congratulated the Rev Oliver Ogilvy on the 50th anniversary of his ordination, which was on the 30th of September this year.

The Moderator gave a very meaningful address and the congregation were in good voice for the hymns.

At the close of the service an anniversary cake was cut by Mr Alex Murdoch assisted by Hallie McClintock and a crystal block depicting St Ninian’s Church, which was commissioned for the anniversary was presented to the Moderator, who in turn presented a crystal block to our church – the block showed the Iona Cross. Mrs Hewitt received a basket of flowers.

Over 100 people then enjoyed a buffet lunch and a time of fellowship.

A memorable day was very much enjoyed by everyone.

Photographs of this day will appear on the web site soon.
