GUILD COFFEE MORNINGDaffodil TeaPray for Schools DayVisit of the Moderator of the General AssemblyGuild - 19 OctoberIndex Pray2Transformby Fiona Kennedy - 20:41 on 14 June 2009This went very well on Saturday morning. There was a real sense of God's presence there and a real urgency in prayer. Five speakers gave us an idea of the issues and concerns they had and then we broke into small groups to pray about these issues. John Dougan, a local councillor, spoke about the regeneration of Dicks Hill and the work that is happening there; trying to make Stranraer a Fairtrade town, the chaplaincy work at Stranraer Academy. Jenny Balmer, a local GP, asked us to give thanks first for the number of Christian Doctors that we have locally and to pray for them in all the challenges they face. Some of the challenges involve the drugs/alcohol problem in the area; the increasing number of elderly with an increase in the rise of dementia; single parent families and the low self-esteem that many young teenages, especially girls have these days. Alison McWhirter, a local teacher asked us to pray that schools are a safe and secure place for all pupils, that any bullying is dealt with effectively, that staff have the skill, patience and wisdom to deal with all they face, that the children show respect to the staff and each other. She also asked us to pray for good RME resources to be made available in schools and for any leaders to come forward to lead Scripture Union groups in the schools. Robert Fisher spoke above local and national concerns in the farming industry. He highlighted the isolated nature of the job and asked us to pray for support and help for local farmers. He also spoke about the need for strong agricultural policies at local and national government levels and for the protection from disease/illness of livestock. Fiona Kennedy spoke about the many challenges/pressures that face families today in an ever changing world. She highlighted the need for work/family balance and the pressures on families today. One of the differences today is the advent of new technology and how to help our young people use it for the good and to beware of the dangers. She spoke about the pressures of being a Christian parent and of the problems that can be faced with other activities being on a Sunday at Church times. She asked for prayer for Churches to meet these challenges and to reach out to our teenagers especially and to remember them constantly in prayer. Please remember to continue to pray for all these issues and concerns, especially as they affect our local community. There will be probably be more of these types of prayer events happening - so look out for details.
